Plenary Panel ILA HQ: International Law as a Tool of Resistance

As the final panel of the 82nd Biennial ILA Conference, the ILA Headquarters Plenary brought together the Association’s leadership for a wide-ranging and engaging conversation on a pressing question: how can international law serve as a tool of resistance in times of profound global uncertainty?

The panel offered a broader reflection on the role of international lawyers and institutions in defending the rules-based international order — and on the possibilities for using existing legal frameworks to respond to attempts to weaken them.

The panel was convened by August Reinisch, Professor of International Law at the University of Vienna, Member of the International Law Commission, and President of the Austrian Branch of the ILA, and featured Christine Chinkin, Executive Chair of the ILA; Lucas Lixinski, Professor at the Faculty of Law & Justice at UNSW Sydney and Director of Studies of the ILA; Dr. The Hon. Mme. Justice Chantal Ononaiwu, Judge of the Caribbean Court of Justice and ILA Diversity and Inclusion Officer; and Antonios Tzanakopoulos, Secretary-General of the ILA and Professor of Public International Law at the University of Oxford.
